Penco was the first (1st) settlement in southern Chile founded by the spanish during the Conquest of America.
Francisco Pizarro, the first (1st) authority among the spaniards, decided in Peru (El Cuzco) to send some of his men to explore the Southern Cone of South America, what we now know as Chile.
Thus, in the 1540s, after Pedro de Valdivia founded the city of "Santiago de Chile", he undertook a trip to the south (S).
Before coming to Concepción (located from the beginning on the floor of Penco) he faced the "Mapuches" and in several battles, as for example happened in the first (1st) of these clashes: "The Battle of the Andalien River" (1550 A.D.).

Although the anniversary of Penco takes places in February, the Concepción-City was founded in Penco on October 5, 1550.
Its historical explanation´s that tha spaniards first (1st) stepped on the "Peguco Valley" (as it was know before to Penco) on February 23, 1550.

On February 23, 1550, Governor Pedro de Valdivia, together with 200 men, camped in the "Andalién Valley" and faced a large indigenous army in a tough night battle near the current "Palomares neighborhood".
